What Does a Prefabricated Scaffolding Mean?
June 19, 2019Prefabricated Scaffolding employs pre-made and purpose-shaped elements. Those parts erect faster because the "Prefab" sections are already formed and locked into single-piece frame segments. In a nutshell, this is extreme-edge system modularity at its finest. However, prefabricated trestles and their associated cross members are built to suit particular applications. Unlike conventional scaffolding systems, which fully break down into multipurpose components, prefab scaffolding can't always adapt to fit larger projects.
Deconstructing Prefabricated Scaffolding
The trestles are formed of modularly structured frames. Fastened to pre-formed cross members and beams, those architecturally uniform modules combine readily to form unified sections. So far so good, but is this system really the jewel in the crown of the scaffolding industry? Yes, there's a great deal to be said when erecting a modular construct like this, but prefabricated scaffolding does have limitations. Due to that modular build, the structures available to a team of scaffolding professionals are limited. That's not a problem with tube-and-coupler systems, which can combine into limitless shapes. As assembly-convenient as this scaffolding type clearly is, the modular frame pieces are typically used on smaller projects.
The Different Modular Trestle Shapes
Like any other modular system, the frames used to build prefabricated scaffolding towers use common form factors. It wouldn't be a very good prefab system if there were dozens of frame types to pick from, after all. There are the well-established A-Frame sections, which are used with planks to carry out single level jobs. Of more benefit, H-Frame sections use rows and columns of square "cells" to create robust galvanized steel trestles. They provide differently sized vertical and horizontal spans, which snap quickly to prefab platforms. All the same, the end product is a pre-determined scaffolding tower, with its modular elements obeying the rules of some designer-implemented final form factor.
Designer-Imbued Architectural Attributes
This article is perhaps doing prefabricated scaffolding a disservice. By boxing the system in and assigning that restricted purposes label, we're marginalizing an at-height work option that offers several unique features. For one thing, system designers create purpose-built scaffolds out of modular frames. For cantilever, swing-stage, or specialized tower scaffolds, a purpose-designed structure can satisfy particular work settings and scenarios in ways that conventional staging systems cannot easily match, all while delivering that fast to assemble hallmark feature.
It's true, individual beams and scaffolding elements come together in endless ways to form stable and rigid work towers. However, if a certain assignment is known and often executed, a set of prefabricated elements has much to offer. As long as the work isn't carried out many metres above the ground, a modular staging system erects rapidly to form a purpose-designed, safety-assured frame, one that's been tested to destruction by its own designers.
